my issue is more using foursquare check-ins to gauge, well, anything. starting with a select set - people who use it, and how narrow a range that

likely is, then narrow to those who regularly use it (they say they have tens of millions of users worldwide; but, when last I checked, they will not release active numberrs).
I know so many people who use it periodically or used it for a while then stopped. that's likely true for a whole lot of users.
add-in variables like how was the weather in other cities last year? combine that with that the holiday last year was on a wednesday and many more people stayed near home vs. when it falls on or near weekends, and if there aren't any of those places nearby? and and and.
