When is it acceptable to play new stuff?

Kind of truly wondering...
I love going to concerts and am willing to forgive and accept quite a bit from the act(s) that I've gone to see.
This could be tempered by the fact that I've seen established to sort of established acts at small venues that they've specifically targeted to try new stuff or at even smaller venues where tis all pretty much new stuff for the act
