wide angles tend to be a more difficult design because they have to do this optical trick of having its focal center well ahead of its natural center

remember that most cameras have a reflex mirror and it needs room to flip up out of the way. this is why most 35mm cameras would come with a normal lens of 50-55mm when according the definition (based on the diagonal of the image coverage) would be 42.5 (which the original 35mm cameras like the first leica cameras did)
so to get a wide angle view on an slr they came up with a retro focus which is why they are so huge when a wide angle for a leica was tiny....so the front of the lens gathers the light and the rear has to alter the direction to blast it towards the image capture area. =<
