The actual number isn't the important thing if you're comparing everyone to the same line - it's the relative comparison of all players.

It's about having a quick way to compare different players' total contributions.So one player is has a 3.4 WAR, another has a 5.2 and we can quickly say the second guy does more overall. The baseline is just so there's a consistent relative measurement.
