...was to end the film with Mike becoming a Laugher.

We come to grips with the idea that mike can't be scary throughout the film, just as he does(Although, I think the only person in the fraternity that's in any way scary is Sully). So, it's very melancholy that he has to let go of his dream. I think it would have been heartwarming to see him realize that he can do the same job by making kids laugh (something he's very good at).
