I'd say competition matters more for movies aimed at children because they are not the decision makers.

Their parents decide when to go see the movies the children are wanting to see. And parents will (generally) not want to take their kids out to a movie twice in a week. So it can be a case of "pick one".
There's not the same flexibility as, say, teenagers who will happily go see a movie Friday night and then go and see another movie on Saturday, if there are two movies they want to see.
