Frank took the job on the freighter because he knew the pilot of the Oceanic flight and when the fake plane footage was shown on TV he saw that the pilot in the wreckage was NOT the pilot he knew was flying the plane when it disappeared (missing a wedding band, IIRC)
It may be that Frank was supposed to be flying the plane, but I can't recall for sure.
