He was supposed to fly that plane, which is what he was telling the 800-number csr when he was introduced. He knew that wasn't the right plane, because he knew something about Greg Grunberg's character (a piece of jewelry or something) that wasn't being shown. He also said that he knew it was wrong, because he was the one who was supposed to be flying the plane.
