the dilemma can be solved easily
- every hospital room can be split with a screen (do I want to be forced to watch when my roommate gets an .. inspection???)
- move one of the patients to another room
- turn one bed 180 degrees so the look at different walls
- cover the pic when not "needed"

as for the setup: neither one will understand the other. religious/mental suffering can be just as painful as physical. any compromise will not be sufficient, only separation will work.
