kelly so my experiment would be. Get your deepest pot that is wide enough for that to fit inside.

Then take something long enough that's metal (butter knife, fondue fork) and put them through that (two of them crossed collapsible at the right height (rest the objects on the pot sides) to keep the bottom above the water line. Then find a lid that rests on top of the tamales.
The trick also is make sure you check your water level as I have forgot and had a pot burn up.
The other way to do this is a pressure cooker to get the steam cook done as well.
