In response to "You know that's not the criticism. " by Dr.Vermin

I'm being a bit glib, but the story is in part about how "normal" he appeared to be. The photo (not taken by RS, one must note)

is of a very normal seeming kid, but which then calls him a "monster" on the cover. It's as if people are allergic to looking at the entire imagery. Using a picture of the scene or Arredondo would have been irrelevant, because the story is about the dude. To me, this is another case of people wanting their black and white hats on people, and being unwilling to confront uncomfortable images and truths. It's all projection.

The "more substantive" thing isn't as far away from the truth either - since their usual centerpiece stories are about Johny Depp or Dave Grohl or whatever, and those get the cover. They did decide for this issue to make their centerpiece story a bit deeper, and that's the proximate cause of the cover.
