We as a community are somewhat resistant to change ... there's one big one that I want to make but have resisted for the time being.

No, not avatars.

I want to get the "username" and "password" and "save this stuff" and "forgot password" fields out of the posting form.

"You are logged in as [username]. Not you?"

Handle field would stay, but the site would convert to a standard log in/log out structure.
