Random ST help request. The new wife and I are thinking about putting in a backsplash. Any tips? materials, sizes, etc.? Details inside.

We have a basic fairly large galley kitchen. We would do both sides. Roughly 14 inches of space between counter and cabinets, except above the sink.

The kitchen is 13 feet deep.

Basically just looking for thoughts and things to avoid. From what I've heard from friends, it's a relatively simple process. Since we are both teachers, we'd like to get it done now because we know once school starts, our time availability changes a ton.
