One of the reasons Nintendo is failing with the WiiU is because they didn't learn the HD gaming development lesson.

Back in 2005 and 2006, most developers will ill-prepared for the jump from SD to HD game development. They didn't have the increased man power, knowledge, efficiency or time to effectively make higher quality visual games. So, a lot of games were delayed while they got their feet under them, and some companies ended up folding because they never adjusted.
Nintendo saw that rise in cost of HD development, and decided to (wisely at the time) skip it. This gave them insane profit margins last generation.
But instead of watching and learning from the mistakes made last generation, Nintendo did the same damn things 7 years later. they don't have enough staff. None of their internal developers are versed in making HD games. They didn't have enough workers. So, now all the big-named games were delayed for almost a full year.
All they had to do was watch and learn.
