I know AA well but not United. I know with AA you have to be careful when flying partners not named BA or Iberia as certain fare codes get you 1/2 or no miles. I got hit with that on the way back from KL as well as my flight to Japan was on Japan Air and was on a 1/2 mile code.

Even more insidious (with UA) is that mileage accrual always is determined by operating carrier, not ticketed carrier. - ty97 Aug 9, 11:32
