I'm still thinking my way through this, but you may want to check out this column in the WaPo by Daniel Ellsberg

Ellsberg was the guy who released the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s, and was charged with theft of govt info, etc. (ultimately the charges were dropped due to the scandal). He talks about how he thinks Snowden made the right move to flee the country.

Fwiw Ellsberg also regrets going through official channels first, saying that it cost thousands of lives. I expect that sways his viewpoint a bit.
