playing devil's advocate, a couple quick thoughts that 'dis-incentivizing' car buying is non-progressive
|
first, a sales tax is more regressive than a graduated income tax (Oregon is income tax based, not sales tax)
secondly, new cars typically have better safety features, emission controls, and fuel mileage than older cars - you want better technology on the roads
thirdly, if you do have a sales tax you want the revenue from car sales (we progressives love collecting taxes, you know)
