Yeah, the tension is universal, but how it plays out depends on a bunch of factors.

It doesn't seem to be as big an issue in, say, Texas - there are several big cities, which have their own rivalries. And lots of people in those cities have jobs related to the same industries as the rural people, like oil and farming, so there's more contact between the groups and more understanding of why they need each other.
While cities like Chicago, Seattle, etc have industries that aren't dependent on the rest of the state. You don't need to understand farmers to succeed as an aeroplane manufacturer like Boeing, a software company like Microsoft or a coffee company like Starbucks.
