It's more historical anomaly than anything else. GM tried to put the dealers out of business during the depression and the dealers struck back with strong franchise protections.
Are they out dated? Yes. Will dealerships fight tooth and nail to keep an outdated model that favors them? Of course. Will it fail eventually? Almost certainly.
