Maybe we've been thinking about this the wrong way. Maybe Hank and Marie and Skylar and Holly and Walt Jr all go into witness protection, and the reason Walt buys the gun is to protect their cover (or to FIND their cover identities).
Or maybe Walt goes into witness protection to take down Madrigal or whoever the Czech connection is, and he comes back because the Czechs are fucking shit up.
