I've decided that the last (most recent?) season of Community was a total failure.

It seemed funny and quirky on the surface, but had none of the heart of previous seasons. When it did show heart, the characters - Jeff in particular - were uncharacteristically generous and charitable. It was very much against type.
Numerous elements were unnecessarily complex. Callbacks to previous seasons were made repeatedly but not followed through expertly. Brief cameo by the fake dean, but pointless. A poster of Star-burns, but nothing more. Magnitude tossed in, in passing. Leonard gets a bit more love. Flashbacks with references to supporting characters that we never see (i.e. we can bring back Abed's dad for 10 seconds, but we never see Shirley's husband or John Oliver?)
And the Kevin/Chang sub-plot never really played out. Chang was all too clever, playing his Kevin persona expertly, even when no one was watching (like when he tied up the professor). All done for what? To sink Greendale on behalf of...? Who was that guy? The dean of City College? He gets like 10 seconds of screen time and we're supposed to remember him from 2 seasons ago? And it's all undermined by one single act of kindness (again, Chang playing against type).
It just didn't mesh. I'm glad they're bring Dan Harmon back for next season.
