I dunno. Female characters seem to inspire more hatred than males.

On Game of Thrones, for example, Sansa and Catelyn - who are both good people who make stupid decisions - are about as hated as Joffrey, who is an evil psycho. Meanwhile, male characters who are good but make stupid decisions like Ned and Robb Stark are fan favourites, and the most popular female character is a tomboy.
