I have of course known about the Manson family and the murders for years.

But I never really read much about them or knew much detail about the Family and their crimes. Well that's now changed.
Something came through FB feed about the 1998 MTV VMAs with a picture of Marilyn Manson. Which made me look up his wiki to find out what he's up to know, his background, etc. I know about the origin of his band name, but as often happens when I wiki, I started clicking links and digging into different articles, resulting in a bunch of reading about the family, the members, and their crimes.
I think I have always been a bit averse to reading about it because I knew I wouldn't be able to square the crimes with reality. If some murders their spouse for insurance, it's murder but on a logical plane you can comprehend the motive. Same with a murder over a money or adultery or other crimes of passion. Awful crimes, but we can understand their cause and generally feel safe from them.
There's no squaring to the Manson crime, no logic, not simple solution. Just crazy.
