I think most of them were not lip syncing in the purest sense but were often singing over background vocal tracks that could overwhelm their live

voices. This was Katy Perry for sure (if you listened closely you could hear her live voice). It was the case for Timberlake as well. You often could hear their live voices during some of the verses and then lose them in the chorus.
