alley behind the hotel. The driver would drive down the alley and go around the block so nobody would ever see that FDR was handicapped. I saw that on a History or Discovery channel show several years ago.
If you want to look at some fascinating stuff, google "underground new york city" or "underground places". There a subgroup of dare devils that get off on "urban exploring"--also a good google--and they post pics of all the cool places they've found. There's a great pic of FDR's subway car on a website devoted to underground NYC.
