What would cause a game to load, but display shifted left so part of the full screen is off the side, leaving desktop visible on the other edge?

Civ V, running through Steam, using Direct X 10&11, loads with a strip of desktop visible on the right and part of the game off screen on the left.

I've adjusted screen resolution, checked for updates on drivers. Windows did an update last night which I'm positive is the root cause, since the game played fine yesterday evening.

But what setting and where needs to be tweaked to get things to display properly again?
