class starts at $10K a year.
Most people in the US - including many people considered to be very poor - have a car, a DVD player, a cellphone, etc.
In India, almost none of the poor have any of these, and the middle class would probably only have a cellphone.
"Everyone shops at the same places" is an exaggeration, but if you go to Costco or Wal-Mart or the Apple Store or the Gap, you'll see a lot of people shopping there who have different income levels. I don't think that's the case in India.
