I do wonder why he asked that. If the theory is true, then who his father is is the bigger twist, and much more impactful on the series.

I get that with Jon Snow's parents being a Stark (Read: Ice) and a Targaryen (Read: Fire), he's the only one in the series with both elements. Still, it's the Fire part that seems more important and interesting to the story, imp. We already thought he was a Stark before.
