I've worked for a vet and for a few years in a kennel and I know a bit about the food.
First, check the ingredients. The first couple should be real meat and not by-products or a grain of any kind. Almost every major brand that you can think of like Purina, Eukanuba, etc... all have a lot of filler and crap that is not good for cats. It's like feeding them McDonald's.
You want food with as much meat as possible. That's what their diet needs and what they would get if they were in the wild. They wouldn't eat corn, wheat or grains.
The best canned wet food that I can recommend that isn't really expensive or hard to find is Wellness chicken formula. http://www.amazon.com/Wellness-Food-Chicken-24-Pack-3-Ounce/dp/B000WFNO88
For dry food I would recommend Blue Buffalo Wilderness. http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Buffalo-Wilderness-Chicken-12-Pound/dp/B002UT92EY
I've done a lot of research about cat food and what I found is there's a lot of crap and you have to really watch what you feed them.
