I want it to be awesome and I'd like to believe they've plotted out where it's all going, but I know they haven't

This serialized stuff falls apart when they make it up as they go along. As absurd as The Following was, it worked because it was a complete story and you could tell from one episode to the next. It kept you wanting more.
