I think they did a pretty good job of hiding his complicity behind his ignorance of the source material.
I loved that they pretty much told you right off the bat that you were in a magic trick -- the only part of the movie that didn't work for me was blondie. She was just...bad and the 'romance' had less spark to it than Christian Bale and Katie Holmes in BB.
