"he told me he loved me. Now I haven't even said this to his mother and don't intend to."

Notice how he doesn't say "I haven't said this to his mother, and she hasn't said it to me."

It would make sense for the kid. Mom says it to the new guy. So, he mimics mom and says it too.

I love reading between the lines on these things.
