That's fair and reasonable, but at this point, we pretty much abandoned them.

we told them for a year that using WMDs was a red line in the sand...and then when it came down to it, we did nothing about it other than let Russia take away the rest of the WMD's.

The rebels, if they have any future victory here, they won't harbor any warm fuzzies toward us so we're basically saying, "Okay, Syria's not on our potential friend list either way."

Maybe that's okay, but we kinda like to have options to reduce the number of locations openly hostile toward us
