1. Live feed updates automatically, news feed doesn't. 2. Live feed is everything, news feed is "random" stuff based on your preferences.

There's a place in FB where you can say "show me more photos" or "show me less about notes" or "show me more about this person" or "show me less about that person". That's all in the News Feed.
Also, I think News Feed is RSS-able, but I'm not sure.
