Helloooooo Slackertalk! That's from Rob Paulsen, who I met yesterday at Cincy ComicCon.

Spent the morning in Lexington at my annual visit to Scarefest. We weren't planning on going this year because my friend, who gets the free passes, wasn't interested in any of the guests. But a friend from Boston was in town on business and he likes Scarefest (& has gone to most of them with us) so we went. This year the main focus for guest was True Blood - Sam, Tara, Hoyt, Luna & Lilith. Sam Trammell was very gracious and had a steady line of people, as did Rutina Wesley (Tara). She has the greatest smile and the cutest pink sparkly sneakers. I could have stood watching her all day, she made me feel so good from her smile. Jim Parrack (who isn't even on the show anymore) was sullen the whole time I watched him. The only time he showed any excitement was when he went over to Malcolm McDowell's booth to get a poster signed. I couldn't get close enough to see the poster. Anyway, Jim had some fans but not anywhere as many as Sam & Rutina. He spent a lot of time with his fingers on his phone. Janina Gavankar (Luna) was late but Rutina came right over to her booth & seemed very happy to see her. Janina had a steady, if small, line at her booth. No one wanted to meet Lilith (Jessica Clark). I rarely saw people at her booth. Maybe if she had been naked & covered in blood more people would have recognized her.
I was looking forward to meeting Sam Witwer but he was very late - hadn't shown up by the time we left. Interestingly, Scarefest promoted him being Darth Maul & Davis Bloome (who I had to look up) over his latest role in the US version of Being Human (which is where I know him from). Oh well, you snooze, you lose a fan (or at least the money he might have given you for an autograph).
Speaking of, I didn't get any autographs at Scarefest. But I got 2 very cool t-shirts (see the links in my next posts).
Scarefest doubled up in space this year which made it a lot easier to maneuver around all the paranormal fans (which make up about half the attendees). As usual, Zak Bagans had the biggest following (aka line) of anyone at Scarefest, followed closely by Aaron Goodwin & Josh Gates. (Don't ask me about these guys because I'm mostly aware of them because they come to Scarefest - I don't watch their shows.)
Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl on The Walking Dead, was at Scarefest again and, again, was late. He hadn't shown up by the time we left (after 1). There were 2 booths set up to collect money for charities. One was a Scooby Doo booth, with a very good Mystery Machine. The other was Christine, with one of the 2 cars used in the movie. When be left for lunch there was still a very long line of people waiting to buy tickets. Good thing they expanded this year.
After lunch we came back up to Cincy and stopped in at the ComicCon. It was bigger than I expected it to be. I didn't even know Cincy had a con. I just happened to read a news article about it. Of course, it was small compared to the one in Chicago I attended (maybe 1/4 the size, if that big). But the fans were enthusiastic. I have to say I enjoyed the ComicCon costumes much more than the Scarefest ones (zombies are becoming passé, I fear).
One of the two attractions for me here was Marina Sirtis (still good-looking, but not ageing well). She had a small, but steady line and seemed genuinely happy to be meeting people. I didn't bring anything for her to sign so I just watched. The main attraction for me was Rob Paulsen. He was very cool. The girl ahead of me (in a line of 2 people at that time) asked him if he would do a video message to her boyfriend. He asked her which character, she got flustered (almost as if she couldn't think of one - embarrassing!) but finally remembered Pinky. So he did a bit about how Pinky was with this beautiful girl & the boyfriend wasn't, but that was OK, because there wasn't anything happening anyway. She was ecstatic. Me, I just had an Animaniacs DVD for him to sign. If I'd know his signature was so cheap (only $20!!, compared to 30/40 at Scarefest) I would have brought a Pink & the Brain DVD, too. Because he'd just done a video I didn't feel right asking for one of my own, not that I'd even thought of it in the first place. I can be so unimaginative sometimes. Also, he wasn't charging people to take pics of him. I forgot to ask for one so came back around later and & asked his handler if I could get one while he was signing for someone else - no problem.
Now the guy who used to play the Blue Power Ranger, Billy Cranston, was a different story. My friend who got the passes & writes a blog wanted to interview him about his claim he was fired for being gay (the producers say he was hard to work with). My friend had been in contact with him on FB and told him he'd probably be by on Sunday. Our friend had an early flight today so that's why we went on Saturday. There was no one at the booth so we stopped by. My friend introduced himself and asked if he could get a picture. He told Cranston he didn't want to take up his time because our schedule changed. He would get a pic, then send him questions via e-mail. The ComicCon handler immediately stepped in and said a pic would cost $10. My friend said he was there on a press pass. She asked for his credentials. The con didn't give us a special entry pass stating press (like Scarefest did) so my friend said, here's my business card. She refused to allow a pic to be taken. My friend said, go check the Will Call table - his press application was there. She walked off (looking like she wanted to get Security). Cranston seemed all apologetic but wouldn't allow a pic, saying he had to follow the con's procedure (bullcrap!). He must not be doing well financially, or is so stupid that he was OK with refusing a pic & getting a bad write-up. Maybe both.
But other than that incident, we had a very fun day. Oh, Richard Kiel is very large & looks very, very old (which is actually to be expected). And there was a very cool Lego set-up at the back of the hall that impressed me, who is not into Lego.
