I am not sure why I continue to be surprised at how crappy most EMRs are. Our ICUs now have a new EMR from Allscripts. Rather crappy.

For the daily notes that we have to write on each patient the problems and plan is the meat of the note. But the text box for each problem is the height of two subject lines here on ST. So you ever have to type it all out in Word and copy/paste or continue to scroll up and down within the tiny box. I have no idea who designed it.

For the daily notes there is also a "free-style" option. I was tired with all these tiny boxes so I went to do a free-style note. The other EMR we have is all free-style. Guess what... as I click save it tells me that there is too much text. WTF? It is about a page in MS Word. Seriously?

I swear our other EMR from 1985 is way better than most EMRs I have seen.

Does Mel here work on EMRs? I have an awesome suggestion. Every day I have to look over electrolytes and fill out orders to replete them if needed. It would be amazing if you moved the mouse over the electrolytes value and a box would pop up asking if you want to replete it. Then without changing pages, you just click on a pre-selected option to replete. Once that is done if someone else scrolls over the box will say "replete by ____ at ___" That would be awesome!
