Just read the BOP Survivor preview...a comment about the Blood vs Water theme...(spoils that aren't happening, or something)

The concept, originally, was to have a Blood Tribe (people actually related to each other) and a Water Tribe (loved ones not related by blood).

So, it would have been:

Blood: Gervase and niece
Tina and daughter
Laura and daughter
Aras and brother
RC and dad

Water: Colton and fiancee
Tyson and girlfriend
Kat and boyfriend
Rupert and wife
Monica and husband

When RC's dad couldn't go...they replaced that pair with Dr Candice and hubby...the concept went out the window and they went with plan B...which is to have returnees on one tribe and loved ones on the other.

So it really was designed to be Blood v Water...but a health issue a couple days before filming began screwed it up. At least, that's the way I understand it.
