there was stuff in it, but there's a lot more to framing a shot than just getting everything in. position in frame, perspective, etc create meaning.

Whedon employs none of that. You could easily lop the frame to 4:3 and miss nothing. He shoots for TV, he writes for TV.. the length of a movie is a lot for him to deal with, it seems. his characters exist only to propel the story, not to have any meaning, growth, or relationship. he views story as king, everything else secondary. that's great TV. that's a looong boring movie.
