not really. It's just retailers trying to ensure a certain level of quality

of course stuff doesn't go bad immediately after the date on the package, but they're willing to stand by saying it's as good a product as they want to sell up until that date. After that, they'd rather not take the risk of you buying something that's degraded in quality and blaming them for it.
