In response to "So - were the Oscars any good last night? If Wolverine was funny Ricky Gervais is claiming credit for his jokes." by LMS

That's not hardly fair, we get to see your BAFTAs. We should do some sort of exchange program.

I thought the program was entertaining, funny, and poignant. They did a new thing with the acting awards. They got 5 previous winners from different decades to come together in a group at center stage, then each previous winner spoke from the heart to one of the nominees (they were assigned in advance). One of the best, if you can find it on YouTube was Shirley MacLaine speaking directly to Anne Hathaway. Sophia Lauren was also one of the presenters in that group and she looked fabulous. Pay no attention to the crazy nuts further down the board, she was georgous and was wearing a Valentino (I think) grand ball gown, rather than the current craze of wearing a bit of draped spandex with beads and sequins all over. Hugh Jackman was shockingly good. He sang, he danced, he made several great jokes--the best being a couple of self shivs toward himself. In the middle of the show, they did a montage of old time musicals, which are coming back into style (thanks Mama Mia!)and that's where he really shone. He was joined by Beyonce and their voices and dancing really complimented each other. If you love/like musicals that's worth finding out on the net and watching. Other highlights were Tina Fey and Steve Martin presenting for screenwriting, they were damn funny. Then the speech by the guy who wrote the screenplay (and won) for Milk had people in tears, it was lovely. Heath Ledger's Father, Mother, and Sister accepted his award for him and that was very bittersweet. Finally, Sean Penn had a great acceptance speech for winning best actor in Milk. It was quite self deprecating just a little militant. One thing you have to see, find a pic of Angelina Jolie, she had to be wearing a million bucks worth of emeralds and they were breathtaking. How's that, in a nutshell?
