You misunderstand me. The argument 'we are taxed too much' is an opinion and it is not refuted by the fact that taxes used to (maybe) be higher

As an extreme example, Say the federal tax rate was 90% for everyone in 1950. Say it was lowered to 80% for everyone in 2000.
A movement that argued that 80% is 'too high' would be right IMO (and probably yours). The fact that it used to be 90% doesn't change that.
