One of their purposes was to signal to those who might only be paying half attention, or who might be in the next room, that their show is coming on.

They also tend to illustrate what the show is about, for the uninitiated. But now since every show is an evolving telenovela with huge arcs, that's not as useful. And people today become initiated with a show, not by simply watching it cold, but by hearing stuff at the water cooler and on social media, etc.
