The self-employed have historically been unable to purchase their own coverage in the USA, from what I gather.

It may still be that way, certainly in some states, but I think the days of that blanket denial from insurance companies are coming to a close (at least by 2014), so the people in entrepreneurial circles are understandably excited that it might result in one less risk for self-sufficiency.
