I think you are supposed to recognize it's a dream from the fact that he opens the window/door without waiting for her to put her helmet on. I never thought for a second he could be real and alive, either. What he represents is the need to survive that she had failed to demonstrate until that moment. It was a part of her subconscious that was incarnated as Clooney's character in the dream.
