I would not recommend using Avast as a replacement to MSE. Not because it doesn't work.

I decided to try it after seeing the article TWuG posted the other day, the one where MS admits MSE probably isn't the best security.

During the install process I was offered a deal on the full package. I used Paypal for the transaction (because I was too lazy to walk back to the bedroom to get my wallet with the CC #). Got through to the end where I got a message saying I would get an e-mail confirming purchase and the key to unlock the whole package. (I'd already installed the free version.)

I waited about a half hour - nothing from Paypal or Avast confirming the purchase. So I (foolishly) decided the first one didn't go through so I did it again. This time I was offered a price $20 lower. Woohoo! Again, the message at the end said I would get an e-mail. About a half hour later I get 2 e-mails from Paypal (how could it be otherwise?). I immediately went to Paypal and said to cancel the first transaction (using the "I didn't get the product" reason).

About 5 minutes later I get 2 e-mails from [email protected]. One asked for my phone number or a copy of the front & back of an ID. It said they needed to verify my identity before releasing the software. They would process my order 12 days after receipt of the info. The 2nd e-mail wanted the same or a copy of my passport. Both were signed by Nexway Sales Administration, Avast USD/Nexway.

I went back to Paypal and added to my dispute that I wanted both transactions canceled.

I'm waiting for word from them. If it doesn't come today I'll open a dispute with the credit card.
