Dick never finished high school,[citation needed] and in his mid-20s he "ran away" to enlist in the U.S. Army and was sent to fight in the Korean War.[7] He was put under the command of a Lieutenant Donald F. Draper, an engineer[4] in charge of building a field hospital with only Whitman to assist him; all of his previous subordinates either deserted or were captured.
During an enemy artillery attack, Lt. Draper was killed by a gasoline explosion accidentally caused by Whitman, which charred Draper's body beyond recognition. Seeing this, Whitman removed Lt. Draper's dog tags, switching them with his own. He later awakened in a hospital, was presumed to be Draper, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was then sent home with Lt. Draper's coffin (now believed to be Whitman's) to offer the Army's regrets to Whitman's survivors. He avoided meeting the Whitmans at the train station, but was spotted by Adam, whose parents didn't believe him. Whitman made his escape and began his life as Donald Draper.
