First, Register.com won't release it immediately after it expires. They'll sit on it "just in case you forgot". Then they'll release it at a random point and bots that monitor for expired domains will immediately snap it up and hold it hostage. Just TRANSFER it! Do it now. You get discounts from providers for transferred domains.
