It's a great thriller. We were on the edge of our seats, even though we knew the outcome. Hanks is terrific. The character doesn't reveal much in the way of emotions, but Hanks conveyed the inner fear, concern for the teenage pirate, and constant worry about his family. His Massachusetts accent is solid.
I had two favorite parts. One was in Eyl, the Somali town that's the de facto pirate capital. The way the men in the village fought tooth and nail to be included on that dangerous trip demonstrated the desperation of the people. They have nothing, and they have nothing to lose.
My other favorite part was Phillips' arrival on the Navy ship, in complete shock. There are so many violent movies and TV shows, almost none of which show the human toll. This movie gave us a long scene with Hanks being treated on the ship by a corpsman. He was traumatized and in shock. The way someone SHOULD be after that kind of experience.
My nitpicks... The movie is basically a recruiting ad for the Navy. They are shown as competent, brave, smart, infallible.
My other nitpick, I'm not so sure of. I thought the pirates were shown as maybe a little over the top hysterical, sometimes stupid. Not sure about that. But the nonstop hysterical shouting among them was hard to take for two hours.
Overall, strongly recommend.
