I'm looking at that for digital paint transforms of photos...

though what the gurus suggest is that you look at the color swatches taken from the image, use them to scribble (literally) weird colors in the face and hair, to echo colors from the background or clothes, and then blend them in.

this even for a more photo faithful rendition (as opposed to a more abstract jackson pollack or impressionistic where you would start with a screen full of splotchy color and shapes and then start blending up from the source image)
