Hmm, I know all kinds of good places in northern AZ and NM, but they may not be good for winter camping. In California, Anza Borrego State Park would

be an option - desert area, canyons, badlands, archaeology, art. One improved campsite and lots of places to just pull off and camp.

If we don't have early snow, I'd consider taking I-40 and visit some of the National Parks and pueblos.

So much depends on what you really like to see on your travels. I'm all about archaeology and cultural history :)
